Mysteries of the Great Lakes
OMNIMAX® Theater
July 21 – Winter 2009
Embark on a voyage of discovery through the magic of OMNIMAX®. Witness sweeping vistas, towering cliffs and sandy beaches. Explore the ecosystem of our amazing “inland seas,” and visit the habitats of caribou, the bald eagle and the threatened lake sturgeon. Examine how humanity has brought our Great Lakes to the brink of destruction…and back. Co-produced by the Great Lakes Science Center. Check daily schedule for dates and times.

Meet the Sturgeon:
Ambassadors of the Great Lakes
Come face-to-face with a tank of live sturgeon, the stars of the OMNIMAX® film, Mysteries of the Great Lakes. These prehistoric fish, relatives of the shark, swim unchanged from when they swam with dinosaurs.

Sink or Float

The Lake Starts in Your Own Backyard

Follow a rain drop from your backyard to Lake Erie and back to your kitchen sink. Presented by Cuyahoga River Remedial Action Plan (RAP.)

Become a lake scientist and look through a microscope to see the tiny plants and animals that make life in our lake possible.
Take Home Wetland

Learn how wetlands filter dirty water along the shores of Lake Erie and make your own mini-wetland that you can take home.
What’s in a fish?

Look more closely at the anatomy of a fish, and learn about the adaptations that make life in the water look easy.
Dirty Water Workshop

It’s 1832, and an epidemic is spreading through Cleveland! Use scientific clues to solve the mystery of the Poison Pump.

From Sails to Steam

Take this special tour of the “ship that built Cleveland,” and see Great Lakes history come alive. Explore the boat’s cargo holds, pilot house, guest quarters, and four-story engine room.

Lake Erie Cruises
Appledore V

Take a 2-hour lake excursion aboard the 65-foot schooner sailing ship, Appledore V. Experience a bit of the sailing life and learn about navigation, knot tying and Lake Erie ecology. Get tickets at the box office or call 216-621-2400.

Great Lakes, Great Wine, Great Fun

Board the S.S. William G. Mather for a fun and instructional wine tasting event. Sample Great Lakes wines paired with mouthwatering treats. Join our wine specialist and the crew of the Mather for this memorable evening. Casual summer dress suggested. Age 21 and over. $30 ($28 for Great Lakes Science Center members.) Our hands-on camps teach kids about water, the Great Lakes, ecology and more.
Science of Sailing (7/21-7/25)
Learn about Lake Erie weather, navigation, and the physics of boating. Spend time on the Steamship William G. Mather and sail on the schooner, Appledore V.
Water Wonders (7/7-7/11 or 7/14-7/18)
Discover the chemical and physical properties of water, learn where your water comes from, observe tiny creatures in our streams and rivers and test Lake Erie water.
Great Lakes/Great Science (7/28-8/1 or 8/4-8/8)
All aboard the Steamship William G. Mather where you’ll learn about Lake Erie’s past and present, its ecology and its importance to Cleveland. Examine water samples in our lab.
