Professional Development Programs for Teachers

Welcome to the new Center for Innovation in STEM Education (CISE). Created as a partnership between Great Lakes Science Center, Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s MC2 STEM High School, Cleveland State University and the Ohio STEM Learning Network, CISE is dedicated to bringing exciting, new professional development opportunities to our region’s educators. Our unique programs are the result of the combined strengths of our partners, including Great Lakes Science Center’s expertise in informal science education, MC2 STEM High School’s nationally recognized success with project-based instruction and Cleveland State University’s record of providing pre-service and in-service teacher training in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). CISE also acts as the Northeast Ohio Hub for the Ohio STEM Learning Network, a statewide consortium of STEM hubs designed to share and scale up best practices in STEM education.

CISE 2012-2013 Educator Programs

Hands-on STEM Sampler
For K-8 Educators
Friday, October 12, 2012
9 am – 3 pm

We're kicking off the school year with a taste of two new core offerings for teachers: Project-Based Learning and the FAB LAB. Spend the morning investigating project-based learning, and discover how you can use it to increase collaboration, improve STEM mastery and enhance creativity in your classroom. Then explore the Science Center's FAB LAB, or Fabrication Laboratory, a hands-on prototyping space conceived at MIT that combines industrial design equipment with user-friendly technology. Take away your own FAB creation and get some great ideas for the classroom. CEUs available; graduate credit available with follow-up. $14 per person. Includes lunch and parking. To register, call 216-621-2400. Capacity: 30 K-8 educators.

FAB LAB Fridays
For K-8 Educators
4-day series – November 9, 2012; December 14, 2012; January 11, 2013; February 8, 2013
9 am – 3 pm

Get hands-on and plunge into the FAB LAB, where high-tech design meets creativity. Learn how to use each LAB machine, including a laser cutter and CNC router, to enhance STEM projects and encourage classroom collaboration. Make your own take-home creation, and see how rapid prototypes can make STEM lessons, well...FAB! CEUs available; graduate credit available with follow-up. $200 per person. Includes lunch and parking. To register, call 216-621-2400. Capacity: 30 K-8 educators.

Project-Based Learning 101
For K-8 Educators
3-evening series – February 19, 20 and 21, 2013
4:30 – 6:30 pm

Find out why everyone is talking about Project-Based Learning (PBL), and see how you can use it to animate state standards and engage students in meaningful STEM units. Learn the basics of PBL, including how to plan and execute a PBL unit, and take away an outline for a unit of your own. CEUs available; graduate credit available with follow-up. $65 per person. Includes dinner and parking. To register, call 216-621-2400. Capacity: 60 K-8 educators.

Project-Based Learning 102
For K-8 Educators
3-evening series – April 30, May 1 and May 2, 2013
4:30 – 6:30 pm

Build upon PBL 101 by delving more deeply into Project-Based Learning. Construct a full PBL unit, and create plenty of take-away activities to use immediately in the classroom. Prerequisite: Project-Based Learning 101. CEUs available; graduate credit available with follow-up. $65 per person. Includes dinner and parking. To register, call 216-621-2400. Capacity: 60 K-8 educators.

The Center for Innovation in STEM Education is supported by Race to the Top funding through the Ohio STEM Learning Network, which is managed by Battelle.

NEW! Mobile FabLab

Now you can bring the FabLab, or Fabrication Laboratory, to your school. The FabLab is an amazing technology platform for learning and innovation that combines high-tech production equipment with an easy user interface to help students and teachers use rapid prototyping to design and build just about anything!
