Volunteer

Become a Volunteer!

If you like having fun and meeting new people, become a volunteer at Great Lakes Science Center. You don't have to be a scientist to be part of our team!

We have volunteer opportunities in the following areas:

Science Camp
Science Day Camp volunteers help facilitate camp activities and operations. Volunteers monitor groups of campers and act as role models for appropriate behavior and safety. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and have completed eighth grade. Volunteer applications for winter school break sessions are due no later than November 4, 2016. Volunteers are required to attend a group interview on either November 8th, 2016 or November 10th, 2016 and a mandatory training on December 15, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. Selected volunteers will be required to work a minimum of two 8 hour days. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (the dates for Winter Camp are December 19-23, 2016 and December 27-30, 2016). If interested, please fill out the volunteer application below.

Guest Engagement
Volunteers in our guest engagement department help guests in the center’s galleries including the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, BioMedTech Gallery, Steamship William G. Mather and more. Volunteers assist visitors of all ages to gain an understanding of science concepts by facilitating hand-on-activities, informal demonstrations with our mobile cart activities or formal demonstrations on stage. Volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of one 4-hour shift per week for 3 months. Some college preferred.

Great Science Academy Making STEM truly “come alive” through hands-on, mind-challenging activities and projects is the mission of the “Great Science Academy.” This program runs on Saturday mornings, October – August, for grade levels 6-9.  Volunteer time is approximately 8 a.m.to 2 p.m. Each grade meets two Saturdays during the month. Minimum volunteer age is 18.  We’re especially looking for engineers, scientists (various fields), health care professionals and science teachers who want to share their expertise and see the next generation soar. You’ll be directing, coaching, encouraging, and seeing some fantastic creations – but letting the Scholars make mistakes and sometimes even fail during the learning process. Relationship building is also important; so volunteering at least one Saturday per month is preferred.

Guest Services
Great customer service is crucial for our guests' experience. Guest Service volunteers work at the information desk and provide excellent customer service by proactively solving problems and answering questions about the Science Center, its programs and events. They are knowledgeable about the Science Center and surrounding areas. Guest Service volunteers answer phones, check tickets and wristbands, give directions and act as greeters. Great Lakes Science Center asks volunteers to make a minimum commitment of one 4-hour shift per week for 3 months. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.

Administrative and Clerical Support
Projects include data entry, packet assembly, mailings and shredding. These projects are only available on a limited basis and are done Monday – Friday during business hours.

Facilities and Maintenance
Help with painting, electrical, plumbing and other small repairs, plus help with moving materials and furniture as needed. Volunteers must be 18 years of age and capable of lifting 50 pounds.
